burma an update

according to the bbc new protests, though much smaller than previous, have started again in burma. this is incredible to think since the last time that there were protests, in 1989, it took almost two decades for the people to have the courage to rise up again.

the protest took place in pokkoku a city much to the north of rangoon where the major protests were back in september. the democratic voice of burma had this quote.

The monk said that the protest was a continuation of last month’s demonstrations as he said the monks’ demands have still not been met.

“Our demands are for lower commodity prices, national reconciliation and the immediate release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners,” the monk explained.

the monks are still keeping up the fight though they are not trying to antagonize the government by chanting anti-government slogans instead choosing to chant the metta  a prayer for love and kindness. this came only one hour after an arranged pro-government protest. the monks showed both courage and foresight in their protest even going so far as to notify the authorities of their planned action ahead of time.

the struggle continues and the only hope is continued pressure.

keep the people of burma in your minds.
